During a September 7, 2003 sermon available on his church Web site, Trewhella defended the actions of Paul Hill, who used a shotgun July 29, 1994 to kill Dr. John Bayard Britton, and Britton's escort, retired Air Force lieutenant colonel James H. Barrett, and wounded Barrett's wife, June, a retired nurse. Hill was executed in Florida four days before the sermon.

'It is legitimate to use force or violence,“ Trewhella said in his sermon. 'To think otherwise is nonsense.“
